Abstract

Geographical and religious literature hold an important place in documenting the image of cities. As the capital of the Abbasid Caliphate and a scientific and cultural center, Baghdad was the subject of praise and commendation in the works of many historians, most notably the book "Manaqib Baghdad" attributed to Ibn al-Jawzi (d. 597 AH/1200 AD) and the book "Mu'jam al-Buldan" by Yaqut al-Hamawi (d. 626 AH/1228 AD), They presented a literary and geographical description full of praise for Baghdad, and agreed on its symbolic, scientific and religious status in Islamic civilization. They presented an ideal image of a city that combines religion, science and urbanism. The texts of these two books also highlighted the importance of geographical and literary writing in consolidating the cultural memory of major Islamic cities. The research reached important conclusions, the most important of which is that the city of Baghdad received the attention of Arab and Muslim historians, geographers and orientalists, and its presence in their literature expanded in general annual history books, books of classes and biographies, as well as local history books of Baghdad and books of geographers and travelers
