Abstract

Social media networks are among the most significant products of human thought, enabling individuals to access diverse information and follow events and developments within and beyond their societies. Today, social media has become one of the most prominent tools for news dissemination worldwide. It exerts a substantial influence on shaping the cognitive structures of individuals and communities, as well as their perceptions and worldviews. In the face of societal challenges, these platforms can effectively convey moral, cultural, social, and civilizational messages, attracting individuals' attention and positioning them as primary audiences for specific messages and agendas. At the same time, the use of social media by children with special needs has emerged as a global phenomenon. Individuals with special needs or disabilities constitute a group within society who are unable to live in the same manner as others due to physical or functional impairments, and they often face greater life challenges. It is noteworthy that the proportion of individuals with special needs continues to increase due to factors such as rising life expectancy, delayed marriage, the prevalence of chronic diseases, traffic accidents, violence, and natural disasters. Women, children, and older adults are particularly vulnerable to these risks. According to a UNESCO report (2023), more than one billion people worldwide live with some form of disability, representing approximately 15% of the global population, while between 110 and 190 million individuals experience significant functional difficulties. Children with special needs constitute a highly diverse group. This includes children born with genetic conditions affecting their physical, psychological, or social development, as well as those who acquire disabilities as a result of stressful life events or psychological disorders such as depression. Current global estimates indicate that a considerable proportion of children experience some form of disability. These figures are higher than previous estimates due to a broader, more comprehensive understanding of disability that encompasses multiple domains of functioning, including psychological and social well-being. Most children with special needs experience difficulties in only one domain, although psychological and social issues are prevalent across all age groups and may overlap with other functional challenges. The motivations driving children with special needs to use social media are complex and multifaceted. They include the pursuit of awareness, support, and self-expression, alongside potential risks related to privacy and exploitation. It is essential for those who share content involving children with special needs to consider the ethical implications of their actions, including whether the child's voice is heard and their consent is obtained. While social media can serve as a powerful tool for advocacy, communication, and support, it must be used with caution to safeguard the child's dignity and privacy.
