Abstract

Cofiscations were one of the means used by the Mamluk sultans to organize and control the state's resources. This phenomenon was not uncommon in the Islamic state. Confiscations took on an administrative and economic character, the goal of which was to hold accountable negligent and transgressing statesmen, scholars, and military personnel. Despite the occasional cruelty and injustice, this policy contributed to supporting development by directing confiscated resources to the state treasury, which was then invested in construction or service projects. Confiscations reflected an early awareness of the importance of preserving the state's resources and preventing them from being monopolized by a specific group. This is considered one of the foundations of development, which is based on ensuring the continuity of resources for future generations.

The research addresses the phenomenon of confiscations practiced by the Mamluk state against its employees, including representatives, princes, scholars, and administrators, highlighting how the state dealt with a number of specific cases.

The research is organized into five main sections, addressing the reasons and motives behind the confiscations, the categories covered by the confiscation, the most prominent examples cited in the sources, the types of confiscations, and the authorities authorized to issue confiscation decisions. Another section is devoted to examining the fate of the individuals whose property was confiscated and the mechanism for dealing with them after the confiscation was carried out
