Cartographic representation of symbols used in maps

Section: Article

Abstract

Symbols are a type of general rules that enable the map designer to represent what he supports effectively and accurately on a specific area of paper, as the symbol is a fixation of a specific idea or appearance, as the symbol can be close or far from the nature of the phenomenon being studied. Symbols are the language of the map, as they contain the reader's visual perception and enable him to easily understand the map and quickly perceive its features. The main research problem is represented in the question of what are symbols and what is the purpose of symbols? The main goal of establishing the research and its purpose is to know the symbols and their importance to the map designer and its use in map representation. The researcher used inductive reasoning to collect research information regarding map representation and types of graphic representation within geographical maps. The research reached a set of conclusions that symbols are one of the types of general rules that can allow map designers to represent what they want more effectively on a limited area. There are also basic considerations when choosing map symbols, including the mental ability required to be drawn, the subject of the map, its purpose, experience, compatibility, and accuracy of the stages that the map production went through.
